Rock Scaling
Our rescue instructors are also qualified rock scalers. They specialize in the removal of unstable rock from steep slopes without the use of explosives.
The technique involves the use of levers (crowbars) and rescue air bags. The air bags are inserted into narrow cracks and fissures and then inflated using compressed air. The large surface area of the air bag applies tremendous pressure to the faces of the rock crack, forcing it open and separating the rock from the slope.
This technique is particulalry useful in parks and near residential areas where the use of explosives is not an option.
